Dance for our founder Kate has always been a family thing. She learnt to dance at her Mum’s school and began teaching there inspiring many young dancers. Her mum, Lynn Armsby, was a former British and European Latin American Champion, was a consultant on the development of two dance degrees at Bucks New University, and was senior lecturer and course leader there for seven years. Lynn is also a Director of the International Dance Teacher’s Association (IDTA).
Kate's cousins, Kevin ‘from Grimsby’, with his wife Karen, and Joanne Clifton, have all appeared on BBC's Strictly Come Dancing. In 2016 Joanne won the BBC hit show with her brother coming second for the fourth time!
Family Thing was founded by Kate in Brighton in 2012.
The first group was The 283 Crew, an all-male street dance crew who live together in a supported residence. Since then the school has grown but The 283 Crew are still going strong!
Despite the family connections with dance, the name 'Family Thing' was chosen by our dancers who said that dancing together 'felt like family'.
- To celebrate each individual and promote connection.
- To create dance groups which encourage authentic, creative and joyful self expression.
- To value each member of our family in terms of their own unique abilities.
- To promote love, respect and understanding in every way we can.
